Cosmology & Origins
The expansion of the universe is accelerating. What drives it?
Current explanations
A cosmological constant (vacuum energy) fits the data well, but its theoretically expected value is wrong by many orders of magnitude. Dynamical "quintessence" is an alternative.
Research progress
Acceleration is robustly observed; the cosmological constant problem and the Hubble tension signal that the underlying physics is not understood.
