Existence & Metaphysics

Why is there something rather than nothing?

UNKNOWNimportance 99/100 · Unknown

The most basic metaphysical question: why does a universe exist at all, rather than a complete absence of anything?

Current explanations

Candidate stances include: existence as a brute fact; a "nothing" state being unstable; necessity arguments; and selection within a multiverse. None is empirically decisive.

Research progress

Largely a conceptual frontier. Quantum cosmology offers models where a universe can arise from a vacuum state, but "nothing" in those models is already a physical something.
